Department of Health Warning on Ayurvedic medicines

Ayurvedic medicines

The Department of Health has been notified that some Ayurvedic medicines for sale in grocery stores in Victoria contain ingredients – including lead – that are scheduled poisons.

The Victorian Department of Health also continues to receive notifications of cases of lead poisoning caused by the ingestion of Ayurvedic medications that are contaminated with lead and imported from overseas.

Advice for public

  • An ‘AUST R’ or ‘AUST L’ number on the packaging of products indicates that they are approved for supply by the Therapeutic Goods Administration.
  • Anyone who is using Ayurvedic medicines purchased or imported from overseas or purchased in Victoria where the product does not have this number should stop consuming the product immediately.

Advice for Clinicians

  • Anyone taking unapproved medicines with potential symptoms of lead poisoning should be screened for lead toxicity.
  • These incidents are a timely reminder about the value of asking patients if they use complementary medicines and where they purchase the products from.
  • For advice when poisoning or suspecting poisoning occurs contact the Victorian Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26.

Turning Point Connect and Learn Webinar

Connect & Learn Webinar

Tuesday 25th of July 2023, 1pm to 2pm

Cannabis consumption and parenting: rethinking the evidence,
presented by Dr Tristan Duncan

Against a backdrop of global cannabis law reform, cannabis use by parents has become a site of heightened public health concern. Healthcare providers, researchers, and governments have increasingly cautioned against cannabis use in the context of parenthood, emphasising its potential to impair parenting and parent-child relationships. In this webinar, we critically review the evidence base on parental cannabis use and parenting, highlighting some of the key assumptions, logics, and tendencies at play across this research. We then draw on original empirical research with parents who use cannabis to foreground the ways in which parents understand and navigate their cannabis consumption during the early stages of first-time parenthood. We conclude by reflecting on implications for service provision and policy.

Objectives:
1. To critically review current evidence on cannabis consumption and its relationship to parenting and parenting outcome
2. To explore how new parents who use cannabis understand, practice, and experience cannabis consumption in the context of new parenthood
3. To collaboratively consider how to parental cannabis use might be addressed in health and social service encounters and policy

Dr Tristan Duncan is a Research Fellow at Turning Point and Monash University. His work explores experiences of alcohol and other drug (AOD) consumption and service delivery using social science methods, with a particular focus on gender and practices of care. Tristan has previously worked within AOD and homelessness services, where he has delivered and developed a variety of harm reduction initiatives. His current research projects include an investigation into the interrelationships between crisis conditions and AOD practices, and an empirical study of the socio-cultural and material elements at work in drug driving events.

Date and time: Tuesday 25th of July 2023 @ 1pm to 2pm AEST
Venue: online register here
Who should register? This webinar is suitable for workers in the AOD, mental health, allied health and welfare sectors.

Connect & Learn is a series of case-based webinars funded by the Department of Health, designed to support AOD clinicians throughout regional and metropolitan Victoria. Webinars are presented by experienced clinicians currently working in the AOD sector and facilitated by Turning Point.

The experience of families affected by another’s substance use:
An overview of treatments, presented by Clare Rushton,
Registered Psychologist (Clinical registrar)PhD candidate

This presentation will provide an overview on the experience of families affected by another’s alcohol or other drug use, including a brief history of how families have been conceptualised within the addiction field, their involvement in their loved one’s treatment, and the impacts on the family themselves. The presentation will highlight the findings from a recent systematic review looking into the effectiveness of treatments available to families, and discuss the variation between service approaches based on the different underlying theoretical models.

Through an exploration of the experience of families who are affected by another’s alcohol or other drug use, the webinar will provide an opportunity for participants to:

Objectives:

  • Develop an understanding of the impact supporting someone with substance use difficulties can have one one’s mental and physical wellbeing.
  • Increase awareness of the treatment and support services available to affected families.
  • Understand the different theories conceptualising the experience of families, and the way they have influenced the development of treatment and support services.

Clare Rushton is a Psychologist (Clinical registrar) currently working at Hunter Primary Care, providing psychological therapy to adults and adolescents with a range of mental health difficulties, including substance use, mood disorders, anxiety, trauma, anger, and interpersonal difficulties.

Clare is completing her PhD at the University of Wollongong, NSW, Australia. Her research is investigating the experiences of families affected by a loved one’s substance use, and how to effectively address families’ needs through the intersection of research and clinical practice.
