Carers Exploring Broome

 Alfred Health Carer Services  Carer Support Services include programs which focus on supporting carers (including young carers) of an older person or someone living with a disability, dementia or mental illness.

For information phone Freecall *1800 052 222 from 8.30am-5.00pm weekdays when Access and Referral staff are available.  A reduced service is available 24 hours. * Freecall except from mobile phones.

Carer Support – Mental Health provides short term support and assistance to carers of people with a severe mental illness.
These programs are available to carers:
-Who live in the Bayside, Cardinia, Casey, Frankston, Glen Eira, Greater Dandenong, Kingston, Mornington Peninsula, Port Phillip or Stonnington local government areas, and
-Who have been providing care that is likely to be ongoing for at least six months or more.

The Carer Counselling Program – ‘Talk it over’ with someone who cares
Carers Vic can provide short-term counselling (up to six sessions) that will mainly focus on issues related to your caring role. You can come back after a break or if there is something new that you need to deal with.  Counsellors work across metropolitan and rural regions of Victoria.  Counsellors that speak languages other than English are available in some areas.

Clayton Family Peer Support Group
Held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month from 6pm to 8pm to support families and friends of those with substance dependence at Link (Link Health and Community), Level 1, 9–15 Cooke St Clayton (enter from the car park at the rear of the building.  For information contact Family Drug Help Helpline on 1300 660 068

Family Relationships Service for Carers 1300 303 346  A statewide service based at Eastern Access Community Health, 46 Warrandyte Road, Ringwood 3134  email frsc@each.com.au.  The provision of counselling for families is the main focus of the program. Counsellors have experience and expertise in the area of disability.

Family members may receive counselling to discuss a variety of issues to strengthen family relationships and the care of the family member with a disability through a limited number of counselling sessions.

All services offered by the FRSC are free to carers.

GROW – Better Together GROW Community Centre 9528 2977, 707 Glen Huntly Road, Caulfield South Vic 3162.  This program is about carers of people with a mental illness meeting together to share experiences, gain support, increase coping skills, knowledge and understanding through the use of the GROW program.

Inner South Family and Friends Support Group 9076 4713, email address isfaf@alfred.org.au.   We provide support for families and carers who live or have family members in the inner south region. Mental Health Carer Support Fund  This fund is managed by Tandem and provides financial assistance, usually on a one-off basis, to purchase goods and services for carers to ‘assist and promote the caring relationship’. This fund is available to carers of current users of Alfred Psychiatry.  For more information see under Financial Support and contact the Case Manager or Social Worker of the person for whom you are caring.

The Network is the Victorian peak body of organisations and groups which support carers of people with a mental illness. The network aims to facilitate communication between carers, government and other stakeholders and advocate for policy change, help raise community awareness about mental health issues, provide information education and training to members, support carer participation in planning and delivery of services, support and advocate for the needs of diverse carers and encourage research on best practice in carer support.
