Week ending 2 June 2017  Yes we're at that time of year when we hope our heating and hot water systems keep working well...mine had a hiccup yesterday. This week's EXTRA has the usual broad range of carer and Mental Health sector news including an interesting YouTube video flagging our language around mental health issues...it's satire but makes the point...hope you enjoy!

Mind Recovery College course - Coming out of the clutter closet
For many people who experience mental ill-health, a less than organised home is a by-product or a symptom of the challenge facing people. In this 4 weekly sessions course, the aim is for you to look at some of the underlying difficulties that might be making it difficult for you to gain control, get some ideas on how to make changes and discover that you are not alone.

Indigenous Traineeship Opportunity - Cert 4, Mental Health
Mind Australia (in Dandenong and Narre Warren) is looking for two Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander people to undertake a Traineeship position with them for 12 months. The Traineeship includes completing a Cert 4 in Mental Health, plus supervision, and practical opportunities.

Wellways Update: Following up from the NDIS Forum
The NDIS Forum for Consumers and Carers took place at the Frankston Arts Centre on 3 May, with a capacity crowd of over 300 carers, consumers and mental health professionals. The focus on the forum was psychosocial disability, mental health and the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme). This update includes useful NDIS links and resources

Jewish Care Victoria’s Individual and Family Support Service has formalised an agreement with the Jewish Mediation Centre
Jewish Care now has the capacity to meet the end-to-end needs of Jewish families with children who are separating and/or divorcing where there is significant discord, including family violence issues through the provision of: Telephone and crisis support, safety planning case management, court support, pro-bono legal advice, referral to mediation, financial counselling, housing support and individual, couple or family counselling. Mediation is an important offering for those families who are considering or planning to separate or divorce, and has become an essential part of the divorce process. The Jewish Mediation Centre is a not-for-profit organisation that offers family dispute resolution, for individuals and families. See their website here  for more details.

MHA CEO, Frank Quinlan asks “How urgent are the important things?”… The Eisenhower Principle…at Mental Health Australia it is a principle we look at regularly. One we looked at last week when our Board met for a strategic planning exercise.”

The call for nominations for representatives on the newly established City of Casey Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee is NOW OPEN from 26 May and closes 13 June.  Expressions of Interest for the Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee are sought from people who live, work, or study in the City of Casey, with an interest in Access and Inclusion within Casey.

The Victorian Government is working in partnership with Carers Victoria to develop a Carer Statement which will outline how we can best support and recognise carers.

Inner South Family & Friends (ISF&F) MH Carer Support Group – monthly meeting
* At the next ISF&F meeting on Tuesday 13 June from 7.30 p.m. in St Kilda, Lynda Jordan will discuss the role of the Forensic clinical specialist and how it benefits consumers, families, MHCSS workers and clinicians. All welcome, no charge, no need to book and light supper available.
* Also the ISF&F mid-Year Dining Group lunch is just around the corner on 25 June at Milano’s in Brighton. Booking is essential.

Mental Health workshops for the Chinese speaking community
The Centre for Holistic Health is a not for profit organisation aiming to  promote good physical and mental health among the Chinese community. They are running a series of workshops targeting Chinese-speaking people with emotional issues and their carers.
